K-pop music vs. Pop music

What is Pop and K- pop Music?

K-pop music

K-pop (short for Korean popular music; Korean: 케이팝) is a genre of popular music originating in South Korea. It is influenced by styles and genres from around the world, such as Pop, experimental, rock, jazz, gospel, hip hop, R&B, reggae, electronic dance, folk, country, and classical on top of its traditional Korean music roots.

Modern K-pop "idol" culture began with the boy band H.O.T. in 1996, as K-pop grew into a subculture that amassed enormous fandoms of teenagers and young adults. After a slump in early K-pop, from 2003 TVXQ and BoA started a new generation of K-pop idols that broke the music genre into the neighboring Japanese market and continue to popularize K-pop internationally today. With the advent of online social networking services and Korean TV shows, the current spread of K-pop and Korean entertainment, known as the Korean Wave, is seen not only in East Asia and Southeast Asia but also in Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Latin America, North Africa, Southern Africa and East Africa, the Middle East and throughout the Western world, gaining a widespread global audience.

The term "K-pop" became popular in the 2000s. Previously, South Korean pop music was called Gayo (가요). While "K-pop" is a general term for popular music in South Korea, it is often used in a narrower sense for the genre described here. In 2018, K-pop experienced significant growth and became a 'power player', marking a 17.9% increase in revenue growth. As of 2019, K-pop is ranked at number six among the top ten music markets worldwide according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry's "Global Music Report 2019", with BTS and Blackpink cited as artists leading market growth]. In 2020, K-pop experienced a record-breaking year when it experienced a 44.8% growth and positioned itself as the fastest-growing major market of the year.

Pop Music

Pop is a genre of popular music that originated in its modern form during the mid-1950s in the United States and the United Kingdom.[4] The terms popular music and pop music are often used interchangeably, although the former describes all music that is popular and includes many disparate styles. During the 1950s and 1960s, pop music encompassed rock and roll and the youth-oriented styles it influenced. Rock and pop remained roughly synonymous until the late 1960s, after which pop became associated with music that was more commercial, ephemeral, and accessible. Although much of the music that appears on record charts is seen as pop music, the genre is distinguished from chart music. Identifying factors usually include repeated choruses and hooks, short to medium-length songs written in a basic format (often the verse-chorus structure), and rhythms or tempos that can be easily danced to. Much pop music also borrows elements from other styles such as rock, urban, dance, Latin, and country.

What is the difference between pop and K-pop?

As per my knowledge, POP was and is way famous worldwide compared to Kpop. Pop had some of the most iconic, famous, and talented artists ever. It has originated way before Kpop. Some of the pop artists include Micheal Jackson, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Madonna, Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Adele, Beatles, Eminem, Bruno Mars, and many more. Some of the artists listed above are considered legends in the music and entertainment industry in general. It wouldn't be an overstatement for me to say that almost all the artists’ in the world have been inspired by the above artists'. The same thing applies to Kpop.

Now when it comes to Kpop, it started becoming famous in SK in the 1990s. Most of the time, South Koreans usually preferred ballad singers, hosts of drama, etc. which isn't a huge part of Kpop. But because of groups like H.O.T, Sechskies, TVXQ, S.E.S, etc., it started getting more recognition in South Korea. Then came groups like SUPER JUNIOR, BIG BANG, SNSD, 2NE1, WONDER GIRLS, and other groups who made Kpop more popular and famous in countries like SK, JAPAN, CHINA, etc. than it already was. These groups were mainly responsible for the hype that Kpop was starting to get. At the same time, PSY released GANGNAM STYLE which became famous worldwide. However, Kpop music became known globally because of groups like BTS, BLACKPINK, etc.

In all this, let us not forget that most Kpop artists' were mostly inspired by Pop artists’ and have practically grown listening to those pop stars. Also, we all know Kpop is more focused on visuals and personality compared to Pop. Here, they're supposed to connect to the fans by personality and visuals because of which, there is less emphasis on production, composition, and arrangements of music. In Pop, there is more emphasis on music, VMS, individuality, performances, etc.
