The phenomenon of body positivity

Hard to believe, however, a topical problem that most of us have faced at least once is the denigration of our personality or another because it does not fall within the standard limits of beauty. Two contradictory movements, but which are based on the same principle, are body shaming and body positivity. They involve pressures to fit the universal pattern of appearance.

The interest in the way we look, body and posture, has changed continuously and has led us to conclude that it is more of a social conception than a decision you can make on your own. they highlighted the normal defects and imperfections of man, now, thanks to social media that presents perfectly looking models, this current body shaming has been concentrated.

What exactly does this thing imply?

Well, when we make offensive comments or "jokes" to a person, meant to highlight their insecurities and decrease their self-confidence, we also become members, involuntarily but deliberately, of body shaming. In this situation, some Apologies are not at all effective because they do not show that you regret making a person feel distrustful, but just a subtle sense of guilt.

Because of the unrealistic image promoted by social media, it seems that what we are and what we do is reflected exclusively by our body, turning into an ornament, instead of what it represents - a simple tool of survival. slender women with long legs were appreciated, while in Ancient Greece voluptuousness was valued. The feminine ideal that has been somewhat preserved since Victorian Eve is the hourglass-shaped body.

According to several studies, 69% of women are convinced that the media and advertising set an unrealistic and unattainable beauty standard. Over 70% believe it would be a good idea for the media to promote diverse physical beauty, depending on age. ethnicity and size.

In response to such attacks came the body positivity movement, which promotes inclusion, acceptance of one's own body, and especially physical differences that try to wall up the toxic culture that feeds hatred. Its first manifestation was in the 1960s in the United States. as a fight against the stigma associated with plus-size people and as an act of solidarity with them. In 1967, the first protest against discrimination according to body size took place. It continued later with the appearance of thematic publications, both in academia, as well as online.

Given your studies, when you don't love yourself, you can't take care of yourself and you can't take care of your physical and mental well-being.

The body positivity movement supports the idea of loving and accepting the body as it is. Although social prejudices related to this subject lower self-esteem, we must focus only on ourselves. All that matters is that all bodily differences affect us. makes it unique in our way and we should be proud of it.
