Role models: who are they, why do we choose them, where do we find them, and other questions

Who are they?

There are a few different definitions of the concept of “Role model”:

1. A person looked to by others as an example to be imitated.

2. A person whose behavior in a particular role is imitated by others.

3. A person who someone admires.

4. An inspiration.

5. A person who sets an example for others.

A role model is subjective to each and every one of us. It can be anyone from a family member to a public figure or a fictional character. Everyone can be a role model and everyone is a role model at some point, for someone.

Why do we choose them?

There are times when we need a little bit of inspiration to figure out who we want to be in this life, a small push to try the thing that we were too afraid to even think about. Sometimes we all need a little encouragement to realize that things take time and that everything will be okay in the end. So we choose someone that reminds us about what we find to be truly important.

The secret in the concept of a role model is that once you have one, you will never be alone in the journey of reaching your goals. They will work side by side with you, even if it is only in your head. They will pull you back on the right path, encourage and congratulate you when you arrive where you want to be.

Can it change?

Of course. Role models grow up with us. We have one for every goal we want to achieve. When that goal is reached and the next one comes forward, so does a new role model. There are very small chances of you finding one role model and sticking to it throughout your whole life because there are no two persons in the Universe with the exact same goals and aspirations.

Humans have a curious and unpredictable nature. We have a constant need to learn new things and to develop different skills, so we set different goals that change over time, and with them so do the role models.

Where do we find them?

Everywhere. In books, magazines, movies, tv shows, in our day-to-day life.

Can we have more than one role model at a time?

Definitely. You can have more than one goal at the same time, so you can have more than one role model at a time.
